Pentagon watchdog will audit combatant commands’ cyberwar plans

The inspector general for the Defense Department will audit how the U.S. military’s combatant commands are planning for cyberwar, the watchdog said this week.

In a notice dated Aug. 3, but released Thursday, the inspector general’s office said they were launching an audit to examine whether U.S. European Command “is integrating offensive and defensive cyberspace operations into its operational and contingency plans.”

The statement said the probe would be the “first in a series of audits on the integration of cyberspace operations into combatant command operational and contingency plans.”

“We will consider suggestions from management on additional or revised objectives,” the notice adds.

Asked when the probe might finish, an official in the IG’s office told FedScoop their audits don’t typically have a set publication date.

The official added that there would be no pre-announcement of any other audits in the series.
