LockBit 2.0 pulls the rug. OT help is on the way for small and medium businesses. And the Cyberspace Solarium Commission checks in on the cyber workforce. This is CyberScoop for June 7.

LockBit 2.0 trolls Mandiant

Early Monday LockBit 2.0, a well-known ransomware group, posted a notice to its website indicating it was set to release files taken from cybersecurity giant Mandiant. When the appointed time came, the group posted a note blasting Mandiant as unprofessional, apparently upset about Mandiant's recent report linking LockBit 2.0 to affiliates of Evil Corp., a sanctioned cybercrime group. The note and an associated file seemed designed to disprove Mandiant's analysis, a Mandiant spokesperson said. AJ Vicens writes.

OT-CERT? OT-CERT.

Dragos on Monday launched an operational technology cyber emergency readiness team (OT-CERT) aimed at small and medium businesses, designed to help them get up to the minimum level of security under a jointly-developed energy sector/Department of Energy security framework known as the Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model. Dawn Cappelli, newly appointed to lead the OT-CERT, told CyberScoop the goal was to get those organizations to that benchmark within one year by offering tools, training and advice. OT-CERT is partnering to get the word out about its free offerings with industry groups such as the National Association of Manufacturers. It's rare for a company put together a CERT, but Cappelli pitched it as a labor of love and said the small companies they're targeting likely wouldn't be a good fit as future Dragos customers since the idea is to get them to a minimal standard of protection. Check out the main page for the OT-CERT.

Solarium Commission follow-on report calls for revamp of federal cyber hiring authorities

A follow-on report to the Cyberspace Solarium Commission has called on federal cyber hiring authorities to be revamped and for pay flexibility to be increased in a bid to tackle a widespread shortage of public sector cyber talent. According to the report, published last week, the Office of the national cyber director should work with the Office of Personnel Management to modernize coding structures for the cybersecurity jobs and establish a cadre of human resource specialists trained in recruiting cyber expertise. The follow-on comes as the government continues to face a shortfall of cyber talent, with nearly 39,000 vacant openings, compared with a total employed public sector cybersecurity workforce of just over 75,000 in the U.S. John Hewitt Jones has more at FedScoop.
