A rough week for U.S. hospitals. Why an extortion plot in Finland matters for organizations everywhere. And more insight into how Turla gets the job done. This is CyberScoop for Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020.

Ransomware heats up on US hospitals

The already-fraught security situation for U.S. health care organizations during the pandemic got more serious Wednesday as private companies and federal officials warned of Ryuk ransomware attacks on hospitals. The announcement coincided with multiple reported ransomware incidents in places like Oregon and New York. FireEye said an Eastern European criminal group was active, but did not identify specific attacks. Sean Lyngaas reports.

Why the Vastaamo breach reverberates beyond Finland

The extortion of a prominent Finnish psychotherapy center holds lessons for people in just about every industry. At issue are the obligations of health care organizations to defend their computer networks, and victims’ ability to hold organizations accountable for failing to do so. The organization, Vastaamo, was breached two years ago but the case escalated in recent weeks as scammers began trying to capitalize on the stolen patient data. Sean talked to Finnish white-hat hackers and lawyers to learn more.

Turla never sleeps; don’t sleep on Turla

New research from Accenture shows how, despite a large body of public data on Turla's techniques, the group remains adept at infiltrating European government networks. The suspected Russian espionage group is methodical: The report explains how Turla tailored tools to a specific target — a European government organization — and burrowed into the victim’s internal IT network. Sean breaks it down.

Fraud prevention firm files for bankruptcy, citing fraud

Cybersecurity and fraud prevention startup NS8 filed for bankruptcy this week, following closely on the heels of a co-founder's arrest for allegedly scheming to fool investors from whom the firm raised more than $123 million, according to a Delaware court declaration. Co-founder and former CEO Adam Rogas "had intentionally and grossly overstated its revenue, gross margin, and the extent and profitability of NS8’s operations to current and prospective investors, the other members of the senior management team, the board of directors, and corporate partners," the NS8 chief restructuring officer wrote in supporting the Chapter 11 petition for the Las Vegas-based company. Florida man does a Florida thing

The incident response in this case apparently wasn't very complicated: After Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis discovered Tuesday that his voter registration had been tampered with, authorities quickly followed the digital trail to a suspect in Naples. The man allegedly logged on from his house and changed DeSeantis' information to an address in West Palm Beach, where DeSantis does not have a residence. The suspect's computer had Google search logs and browser histories pointing to interest in DeSantis and activity on Florida's voter registration website, law enforcement officials said. Benjamin Freed has more on the case at StateScoop.
