The White House announces a 100-day cyber sprint that aims to prepare the chemical sector to better withstand digital assaults. Moscow likely eyes how it can disrupt U.S. midterms. And CISA releases performance goals for critical infrastructure. This is CyberScoop for Oct. 27.

Chemical sector lines up for cyber sprint

The chemical industry is the next sector to take up President Biden’s 100-day cybersecurity sprint, the administration announced Wednesday, an effort designed to sharpen operators’ focus on the most significant risks from a digital attack such as gas leaks and other contaminations. The sprint also aims to improve information sharing and “analytical coordination” between the public and private sector and encourage chemical manufacturers to deploy threat detection on control systems. Opinion: Russia won't sit out the U.S. midterms

The midterms are less than two weeks away and in addition to Chinese influence operations, Russia is unlikely to sit this one out, either. Considering the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threats against the West, it is unlikely that Moscow will waive an opportunity to undermine the U.S. during this election season. A combination of cyber operations, more disruptive cyberattacks in coordination with alleged hacktivists and disinformation spread through official accounts are among the activities Russia could aim at the U.S. Commentary from Bilyana Lilly.

Iranian cyber operatives sanctioned over crackdown

The U.S. Treasury Department on Wednesday sanctioned a pair of Iranian intelligence officials and a school they founded as part of the U.S. government response to the “brutal ongoing crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran,” the agency said. The sanctions are part of an overall package that included eight other Iranians and another company, Saman Gostar Sahab Pardaz Private Limited Company, which the U.S. government says is one of the main operators of social media filtering services in Iran. AJ Vicens reports.

CISA posts critical infrastructure performance goals

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency released long-awaited performance goals aimed at setting baseline vital practices for critical infrastructure. The agency created the voluntary goals to apply broadly across all 16 critical infrastructure sectors with a particular focus on the smaller organizations that lack the resources for a robust cybersecurity plan. “The [cybersecurity performance goals] can be thought of as a bit of a quick-start guide,” CISA Director Jen Easterly told reporters on Thursday. “Really a place to start to drive, prioritize investment for the most critical practices across both IT and OT.” Christian has more.
