Does anyone other than spies use LinkedIn? Don't look for the U.S. assistant attorney general on TikTok. And a network of Chinese accounts go on offense. This is CyberScoop for Thursday, August 13.

That job offer comes with strings attached

North Korean government-linked hackers have been targeting the Israeli defense sector with fake job offers, Israel’s Ministry of Defense said. Hackers sent their phony job offers through LinkedIn, impersonating CEOs and top officials at multinational companies. It’s the latest example of attackers using fake job offers to zero in on targets of its espionage operations. So far, it doesn’t look like they’ve had any successful operations with the phony jobs. Shannon Vavra explains.

A fun video sharing app, or a data collection tool?

Maybe TikTok is both. Assistant Attorney General John Demers framed the alleged national security threat from the app as part of a broader “Chinese [government] appetite for large volumes of sensitive personal data.” But unlike the alleged Chinese hacks of Anthem and the U.S. government, Americans are willingly handing the information over to TikTok, Demers said. He also hinted there would be at least one more China-related hacking indictment in 2020. Sean Lyngaas listens in.

AI-generated images help Chinese accounts blast Trump

A network of accounts on multiple platforms has been criticizing President Donald Trump and broadcasting more positive images of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, as part of an apparent campaign to rebuke the White House, Graphika found. The “Spamouflage Dragon" network produces short videos on a near-daily basis on topics ranging from the Trump administration’s decision to prohibit the social media company TikTok in the U.S. to the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Whether the network was connected to the Chinese government remains unclear. Jeff Stone looks closer.

A corporate hacking spree goes on

A Russian-speaking hacking group specializing in corporate espionage has carried out 26 campaigns since 2018 in attempts to steal vast amounts of data from the private sector, according to new findings. The hacking group, dubbed RedCurl, stole confidential corporate documents including contracts, financial documents, employee records and legal records, according to Group-IB research. Victims spanned a range of industries — including construction, finance, retail and law — with headquarters in Russia, Ukraine, the U.K., Canada, Germany and Norway. Jeff has more.

Pandemic relief is an opportunity for fraud

DHS is tracking an “unknown, malicious” cyber actor spoofing the Small Business Administration’s coronavirus loan relief webpage via phishing emails. Suspect emails that link to a spoofed website have targeted federal civilian executive branch, state, local, tribal, and territorial recipients. The messages consist of the subject line “SBA Application – Review and Proceed,” disastercustomerservice@sba.gov as the sender, and text prompting the recipient to click a hyperlink leading to a login page for the credential theft. Dave Nyczepir has the FedScoop story.
