Details from the Kaseya incident will dribble out for the next few weeks — here's what we know now. Hackers breached Jason Miller's social media platform on the Fourth of July. And questions about NSA transparency. This is CyberScoop for July 6, 2021.

Kaseya details victims as attackers demand millions

Software company Kaseya said there are between 800 and 1,500 victims of the ransomware outbreak that spread after hackers breached its VSA platform. REvil, which took credit for the attack, said the figure was more like 1 million, and demanded $70 million in cryptocurrency collectively to unlock the systems of victims that include Swedish supermarkets and New Zealand kindergartens. President Joe Biden directed the "full resources" of the federal government to investigate. It's the third in a recent series of ransomware attacks to draw White House attention, and might be the biggest mass ransomware incident ever when all is said and done. Signs of trouble before a holiday weekend

Kaseya reported on Friday afternoon that a "small number" of customers were affected by an apparent ransomware incident, just as most of corporate America was preparing for a long Fourth of July weekend. Little information was immediately available as the Kaseya and security vendors apparently scrambled to notify affected organizations. The real foreshadowing occurred when it became clear that managed service providers, which oversee technical services for hundreds of their own clients, were hit in the down-stream attack. Tonya Riley broke it down.

Pro-Trump social media platform hacked on day one

A hacker breached GETTR, the social platform launched by President Trump's former adviser, Jason Miller, upon its Fourth of July launch. The hacker, who goes by the name @JubaBaghdad, infiltrated accounts belonging to Mike Pompeo, Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene and Steve Bannon, defacing their accounts to promote the message "@JubaBaghdad was here :) ^^ free palestine ^^." The intruder said the hack took 20 minutes, and that they did it "just for fun." Insider spoke to the attacker.

NSA keeping too quiet on surveillance, whistleblower argues

The National Security Agency never provided its historical legal analyses of its XKeyscore surveillance system to the independent oversight board that’s been investigating for the last five years, according to a member of the independent board who resigned recently. At more than a decade old, XKeyscore — first flagged by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden in 2013 — is used to search massive internet traffic databases to find and analyze a target’s communications. But the unavoidable, incidental collection of citizens’ personal information raises legal concerns the NSA never proved to PCLOB it considered before launching the system, Travis LeBlanc, a Democratic member of the board appointed by former President Trump, said in an unclassified statement. Dave Nyczepir covered the news at FedScoop.
