Putting a stick in the eye of Cyclops Blink

Federal officials said Wednesday that a botnet created by Russia’s notorious Sandworm hacking group had been neutralized before it could do real harm. Attorney General Merrick Garland and others said the malicious code, labeled Cyclops Blink, had infected thousands of machines worldwide, but was not yet fully “weaponized.” Sandworm, known for hacking Ukraine’s electrical grid in 2015 and other high-profile cyberattacks, is associated with the Kremlin’s GRU intelligence agency. Trouble in India

Hackers likely affiliated with the Chinese government infiltrated seven state centers that carry out real-time grid control and electricity dispatch in India, according to a new Recorded Future report. The activity has been concentrated in northern India, where China has clashed with India over disputed territory on the Himalayan border. Other activities by the same hacking group included the compromise of a national emergency response system and the Indian subsidiary of a multinational logistics company. Researchers saw similar attacks between mid-2020 and February 2021, when both China and India agreed to pull forces away from the dispute. Tonya Riley has the research.

Obama reflects on the rise of disinformation

Former President Barack Obama told an interviewer Wednesday that he "underestimated" how seriously democracy could be undermined by disinformation. Obama said he saw the phenomenon "unfold" during his presidency but didn't appreciate how dangerous a force it would become. As examples, Obama cited Russia's hostility to Ukraine, U.S. opposition to the COVID-19 vaccine and the fact that some 40% of Americans believe the 2020 presidential election was rigged. Suzanne Smalley has more.

CrowdStrike and Mandiant announce crossovers

Customers of both CrowdStrike and Mandiant might soon notice some integrations between the two cybersecurity giants’ services. Calling it a “strategic partnership,” the firms said Thursday that the first move will be to fold CrowdStrike’s cloud-based Falcon threat intelligence platform into Mandiant’s cybersecurity consulting services. Later this year, the Falcon platform will “include support” for customers who also use Mandiant’s Managed Defense threat detection and response services, the companies said. Joe has the news.
