Ukraine cyber official puts everything in context

Beyond all the reports about high-stakes political posturing among Russia, the U.S. and other NATO countries, it can be easy to forget that there are actual people in Ukraine working to understand what's happening and deal with it in real time. Victor Zhora, one of the top cyber officials in Ukraine, told CyberScoop on Monday not only about the latest cyberattacks and how they fit into the current context, but also how they fit into an ongoing "hybrid" operation from the Russian government against the people of Ukraine. He also detailed his biggest outstanding questions, and how international partners are helping in the cyber realm. AJ Vicens has the Q&A.

Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber issues, is making the rounds in Europe this week, meeting in Brussels and elsewhere with counterparts to bolster cyber coordination, a White House official told reporters Tuesday morning. The trip comes as tensions between the Russian and NATO countries continue as diplomats work to stave off potential Russian military aggression in Ukraine. AJ has more.

German incident puts energy sector on alert

A cyberattack struck major German oil storage company Oiltanking GmbH Group on Sunday, the company confirmed to CyberScoop in a statement. The attack shut down the oil tank company’s IT systems, according to a statement by the company’s head of corporate communications, Claudia Wagner. Oiltanking’s German subsidiary, which operates all terminals there, is running at limited capacity. The attack hasn’t been attributed to any culprit yet. Tonya Riley reports.

Forescout to gain CyberMDX’s health care expertise

California-based Forescout Technologies says it is acquiring CyberMDX, a company known for its research into vulnerabilities in connected health care devices such as patient monitors, anesthesia machines and infusion pumps. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. The deal is a natural fit for Forescout, which specializes in “device intelligence and network fabric technology,” or finding and classifying everything connected to an organization’s network.
